How to exchange a Northern Irish Driving Licence for an English Licence?

I have a Northern Irish licence which now that I live in England I need to convert into an English licence.

How do you go about this does anyone know? I cannot find anything on google regarding doing so but I know that if you live in England you must switch it over.

You don't need to change it but if you want to.

You do need to change it - its an offence not to update your vehicle licence when you change your address and it is not possible to apply an address outside NI to an NI Licence.

The DVLA website does not have a gateway to apply for a GB licence to replace an NI one but they have a contact number for licence enquiries

Telephone: 0300 790 6801

This website gives details for Non British Licences - a Northern Ireland Licence is as British as a GB licence but cannot have an address outside Northern Ireland recorded on it

Why? They may still be contactable at the NI address. BigBopper Posts: 271 Forumite

not if you have changed your address - its an offence not to have your current address on your Driving Licence and you can only have an NI address on an NI Licence therefore it is necessary to obtain a GB licence

If you are contactable at the NI address, there's no need to change it.

For example the NI address is your parents.

And, if you keep a NI licence on it, it's not possible to have a GB licence.

Anyway, the distinction is academic, now that all NI registrations and licences are managed from Swansea.

It's only possible to have one EU Licence.

I think it used to matter. I knew someone whose lodger missed getting points on his license (or losing his license) back in the 80s as he had an NI one.

Back in the day they had photo licenses when we didn't and license plates without year identifiers.

There aren't many organisations that apply to Great Britain but not NI but the DVLA used to be one of them ( and their Pharmacy Schools are registered with their own agency, not the GB one).

There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker This discussion has been closed. Back to Top
